Pictured above is old U.S. Highway 41 (Veterans' Bridge) bridge across the Tennessee River near Jasper as it appeared around 1937. This historic structure, which is still in use in 2005, is sceduled to be replaced in the next few years. The bridge was originally a tow bridge with vehicles being charged a tow for crossing. The old Hales Bar lock and dam is pictured a little upriver from the bridge. All of the fields and farmland pictured above are now covered by Nickajack Lake after the Tennessee Valley Authority constructed Nickajack Dam in the 1960s just a few miles down river from this location.

Pictured above is old Hales Bar lock and dam on the Tennessee River near Jasper. Constructed from around 1907 through 1911, the dam served the Sequatchie Valley by producing electricity for the thousands of residents, businesses and factories in the region. The dam was replaced in the 1960s after the Tennessee Valley Authority built Nickajack Dam a few miles down river after which, the old Hales Bar dam was removed. Today, only a portion of the lock and the old powerhouse of the dam still stand.
