Palk, Peter - Born Dec. 21, 1824 - Died Mar 21, 1883 - "Our Father"

Note: The Peter Palk grave marker was found in late September 2007 underneath the Gunter obelisk stone during restoration work on Gunter plots stone enclosure. The Palk marker was some years before apparently taken from the cemetery and used to shim the Gunter stone to level.  Since there has been work many times done on the cemetery over the last century, it is not likely that information will be found as to who or when the Palk stone was misused. It is also unlikely that we will learn of where in the cemetery it should be placed since there are hundreds of unmarked graves. As a result, Dennis Lambert set the Palk stone on October 13, 2007 over an unused plot near the Gunter stone enclosure. Maybe someday it can actually be placed over Mr. Palk's grave if information or evidence is found to pinpoint the location.

The Gunter Cemetery, pictured above on October 23, 2005, is located near the Chapel on the Hill (old Primitive Baptist Church) near the intersection of Elm Avenue and Eighth Street in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. The graveyard, which contains at least 1008 graves, of which only one in ten are marked, is named after John Gunter, who owned a pre-Civil War home near this location. Mr. Gunter along with several members of his family are buried here.

This section of the land running parallel with Elm Avenue just outside the old concrete posts, which designate the Gunter Cemetery's boundaries, contains several unmarked graves that are evident by depressions in the soil. Bodies within many of these were removed to the Burl Lee Annex in the 1930s after construction on the street forced their removal. It is unknown how many graves are still located outside the boundaries.

Three large oak trees of nearly the same age, size and spacing apart stand near the Gunter family plots and limestone walls, which can be seen in the far background.  These trees look to have been planted more than a century before as either property boundary markers or for lining the road leading to the Gunter Plantation.                                                                                                                  Photograph by Dennis Lambert

The Gunter family buried within these limestone walls shared a single partically damaged obelisk stone. Peter Palk's stone was found underneath this marker when cut-up in September 2007.

There are four walled in sections of the Gunter Cemetery, which are pictured above. Only the Gunter section has all of its graves marked.

Time has taken a toll on this once covered infant's grave. Many tombstones and walls within the graveyard are damaged in a similar fashion or now missing all together. This grave belongs to Willie Parton, who died in 1881 and was the infant son of J.R. & Anne Parton.
